This last theme is named after Charlene Carruthers book, Unapologetic: A Black, Queer, and Feminist Mandate for Radical Movements, who is also founding national director of BYP100 (Black Youth Project 100).
We have now reached the end of the semester. The early classes dove deeply into history... and now we wrap up the class thinking about Black futurity at the crossroads of Black digital innovation, Black Lives Matter, and fantastic imaginations. This last unit asks you to do a Black rhetorical analysis with your mind and heart on Black futures. |
Your Writing AssignmentDo your final writing assignment as a farewell to Black rhetorical study--- at least for now. You can write this as a letter to yourself, to a former or current teacher, to a child in your care (who you can have help you with the assignment), or to a sibling/parent/child/spouse/relative (who you can also have help you with the assignment). You can also write this as a story (fact or fiction or both), stream-of-consciousness, or epic poem (as in a long poem.) You might even do a combination of all of the above. Just do your best to hit 500 words. If you have a peer who you can write collaboratively with, all the better! Write this together on a google doc, etc. and submit it as one assignment. You will notice that you have movie/film options for this assignment. If you have already seen the movie listed, don't just work from memory. Watch it again with a lens on Black language and rhetoric. In your writing, address the following:
Submit this assignment as 500 words of prose in a regular word processing document (4 points). For 1-5 points extra, you can design this project beyond just the alphabetic. SHOW UP and SHOW OUT. Add images and create a digital zine. Or, create a video or set of google slides. Or do some combination of these things. You decide! |
Your Viewing OptionsYou can watch any ONE film/show below. In writing, you can focus on a specific scene/moment, a specific character, or even the soundtrack. Decide your focus first and then organize your writing from there. The point here is to think about how these films execute and embody an African American rhetoric of the future and the fantastic!
OR . . . You can watch any ONE video below. In writing, you will focus on this person's activism (and the way they creatively use digital tools). The point here is to think about how these activists achieve a Black rhetoric of freedom, the future & the digital!
