Angel's Discussion points |
How is calling himself Joey Bada$$ already an example of Black Rhetoric?
In the first video I showed y'all, “Land Of The Free,” why do you think Joey BadA$$ had the kkk members disguised as police officers, judges, and priests? What is he trying to convey? Do you think it’s important for artists to speak on current, social issues, especially racial discrimination? Why or why not? What are some issues going on in today's society you wish artist would talk more about through their music? |
IV. Black Rhetorics/ Black Philosophies of Language
A. CALL-AND-RESPONSE!
|
Call-and-Response is critical and central to Black Language’s history and originates in Black spiritual traditions. It gets real secular VERY QUICKLY though, what Geneva Smitherman called a sacred-secular continuum. |
CALL-AND-RESPONSE: Rhetors become directly involved with their topics (also called direct address) and seem to be speaking to the audience. It is almost as if they are waiting for a response when they are asking questions. This is very different from using the traditional academic/school convention of distancing yourself, staying neutral, avoiding personal injections, or restricting talk-writing styles. This “Single Ladies, Clap Your Hands” is a clubhouse call-and-response that is decades old: Cameo’s “Single Life” (at 3:18); Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone”; Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”; etc etc etc… and then there's just foolishness like this! And this!

B. TONAL SEMANTICS
|
The sounds of things get captured through repetition, alliteration, rhyme. Think of talk-singing and intonational stresses. “Intonational contouring” also offers specific stresses and pitches in pronouncing certain words (like PO-lice for police). Source: Geneva Smitherman |

C. PRACTICE
Directions:
Move into groups and choose a facilitator. As a group, you will complete the worksheet together (each individual needs to submit a worksheet). First, describe the instances of a) call-and-response and b) tonal semantics. Then, discuss what difference Black rhetoric BR makes in these moments (another way to think about that is to pinpoint the purposes of BR for this rhetor and audience).

- Facilitators need to share the group's thoughts, not just individual thoughts.
- Facilitators (who followed directions) always receive an extra point for that day's "classroom activity." Let everyone get a chance.
- As you watch these performances, do you see any connections to Kopano's essay (read for today)?
