Defining LITERACIES & CULTURAL RHETORICS
LITERACIES (Carmen's definitions based on NLS):
  1. The space of what people do, rather than what they have or do not have
  2. A set of socio-cultural practices, rather than a set of neutral skills to be acquired according to already given political and social hierarchies a deep engagement with political processes (we either construct ourselves as objects or we act as subjects who can change what lies before us)
  3. An issue of context---personal, cultural, geographic, and historical
CULTURAL RHETORICS (Carmen's definitions)
  1. A methodology that looks at EMBODIED practice (vs. western focus on persuasion and argument in final products and/or public address)
  2. A process that builds theoretical frames from inside the culture in focus: beliefs, relationships to the past, meaning-making, ways of passing knowledge to next generations (vs. accepted, academic frameworks derived from another culture/tradition)
  3. A focus on anticolonialism--- borrowing from Mignolo, “delinking” from colonialism and white setter colonization
Both center PRACTICES and PROCESSES of political and sociocultural critique (not finished, products of language and communication from western norms)
