10 Elements of Black Choral Language Style
  1. The songleader acts as a galvanizer who must represent strength and courage; the songleader must also pick the right song at the right moment and make everyone else want to sing and be a part of that moment
  2. Vibrato is prominent:  Oscillations in tone (like wobbles/shakes)
  3. Singers "worry the line": sing several notes on one syllable
  4. The call-and-response style is central (Sustained and textured calls to other singers; the songleader can raise or line out the lyrics)
  5. The beginning note is soft and gentle/first note is not attacked since notes get built up (opposite of the European tradition)
  6. Song can be passed on to another songleader 
  7. There can be spontaneous interjections by solo voices
  8. Dissonance is encouraged; more important than "perfect" harmony (speak individually but also with one voice)
  9. The bass is a rolling bass--- punctuates phrases to intensify something
  10. Higher voices accent the chorus and its message

  1. Read over your handout (there are 6 different versions in the room).  Underline and comment in the margins.
  2. Listen to the corresponding songs/speeched that match your handout (the tracks are numbered below and correspond to the numbers on your handout)
  3. Why do you think each song/speech was so widely repeated?  What SPECIFIC topics/phrases do you think moved people most?
  4. What elements of black choral language do you hear and notice?  What do you think the politics of this language form are?
  5. Does this music remind you of anything else we have studied? Why or why not?
  6. If this music was all you knew/had heard, what would you say the CRM is?  Why is music (& this style of music) so central to the CRM?

IV. Group Discussions
  1. Choose a facilitator who will take notes and speak to the whole class.  The facilitator should turn in these notes and make sure they say/do more than your just individual submission!
  2. Discuss your answers to question #3 above. The facilitator should make sure everyone shares and talks.... and takes notes.  (Feel free to take notes on what your colleagues say.  The final exam will work the same way as the midterm. This might be an essay you write about at the end so gather as many ideas now as you can.)

  5. As a group, decide on one song that you want the whole class to hear.  We will hear the group's facilitator talk and then hear the one song/speech the group thinks the class should hear.
