​Discourse Strategies & Black Rhetoric (BR) via Fannie Lou Hamer
  1. Click here for today's PDF. Please keep your notes and this worksheet.  You will often be asked to perform an Black rhetorical analysis of a speech or performance.  Use this vocabulary/these definitions for that work. The point is for these definitions to become a natural part of how you talk about and hear Black language and rhetoric.
  2. Click here for today's speech.  Use this handout to follow along with the speech that we will be listening to today: Fannie Lou Hamer's "UNTIL I AM FREE, YOU SRE NOT FREE EITHER." We are listening to the parts of the speech highlighted in the handout.
  3. As a class, we will listen to the speech together. Use the handout as you listen.
  4. Take a few moments to go over the handout and make notes about the discourse strategy.  We will do this activity again next week with one of Malcolm X's speech.
  5. Open Discussion: What are things about Fannie Lou Hamer that you learned that you didn't know before?  Why is she so central to the Civil Rights Movements--- especially voting rights?  ​
6. Final Discussion: What examples of BR does hamer use?  Why? Why was FLH such a highly sought-after speaker?  But shunned by the mainstream (including the CRM) at the same time?  Loved by college students activists?
